Ottawa is an absolutely gorgeous city that is definitely at the top of Canadian tourist destinations. The city has many wonderful attractions and is the seat of the Canadian government. Visiting the city is much like visiting Washington D.C, a trip that will provide you with many beautiful sights and enrich your understanding of politics and history. You may even be so entranced by what Ottawa has to offer, that you may even want to look into Ottawa homes for sale and stay for an extended period of time. So what makes Ottawa so great, and what are the must-see attractions in the city? Here are the top attractions in Ottawa.

Parliament Hill

Parliament Hill is probably the first thing people think of when they think of Ottawa. Parliament Hill is the seat of the Canadian government, meaning that it is extremely important when it comes to politics and history. Right away you’ll notice just how impressive the buildings look, but that only scratches the surface. The inside of the Parliament buildings are equally as impressive, and guided tours can educate you about the inner workings of Canadian politics. If you’re lucky enough, you may even be able to attend a government forum and ask politicians questions, or you’ll be able to witness the famous “Changing of the Guard” ceremony. If you’re in Ottawa, you absolutely have to visit Parliament Hill.

Canadian War Museum

When thinking about military history, Canada doesn’t initially strike people as a nation to focus on. However, Canada has a lot of military history dating all the way back to battles between Canadian settlers and the native people. Canadians were key parts in both World Wars, and without the sacrifice of brave Canadian soldiers, the wars could have turned out drastically different. The Canadian War Museum honors Canadian military history and illustrates the sacrifices that have been made throughout Canada’s history. The museum displays great pieces from many different time periods, making the museum the perfect attraction for history buffs to visit.

Byward Market

Attractions are usually known due to their tall impressive stature or the significance of their location. However, the Byward Market is unique in that it is just a market, but that doesn’t make the attraction any less fun or interesting. The market is over a hundred years old, and it truly encapsulates the culture of the city. Here residents and tourists can buy all sorts of different fruits and vegetables, produce that is sure to be of high quality. The area around the Byward Market has been booming thanks to the tourism that comes in, and many different shops and restaurants have opened up around the market. As a result, you can make an entire day out of shopping around the market and the surrounding stores. If you’re someone who loves shopping, visiting the Byward Market may be the perfect way for you to spend your day in Ottawa.

Rideau Canal

If you’ve ever seen pictures of Ottawa, you’ve probably seen the gorgeous Rideau Canal. Originally built for strategic and military purposes, the canal is now used primarily for recreation. In the summertime, it is extremely common to see boats and canoes on the canal, as it is a great way to enjoy a beautiful sunny day. In the winter, however, the entire canal freezes over due to the frigid Canadian temperatures. As a result, the canal turns into one of the world’s largest natural ice skating rinks, attracting tourists from all over. If you’re in Ottawa, you’d be missing out on a lot if you didn’t check out the Rideau Canal, no matter what time of year it is.
